MLKCH offers moms the best of both worlds

Baby on the way?  There’s no safer and more supportive place to welcome your new addition than MLKCH.  We’ve won national recognition for our low rate of Cesarean section and high patient satisfaction.  MLKCH is one of the few hospitals in the nation with a nurse-midwife practice model, in which a nurse-midwife as well as a doctor are available during labor and delivery.  This ‘best of both worlds’ model provides moms with the high-tech resources and safety of a state-of-the-art hospital and physician practice as well as the caring, attentive and respectful support of a registered nurse midwife.

The MLKCH difference

Fewer C-sections

MLKCH’s performs far fewer C-sections, or cesarean sections, than average hospitals in California.  C-sections are a surgical procedure used to deliver a baby through an incision made in a mother's abdomen and uterus. The procedure exposes women to risks like infection or hemorrhage. MLKCH has a C-section rate that is less than half the California hospital average, which means our mothers are less likely to experience complications and more likely to recover from childbirth faster.

More midwife-assisted births

At MLKCH, you are far more likely to be delivered by a midwife.  Why is that important?  Nurse-midwives are trained to listen, to support, and to advocate for their patients.  Our moms report higher levels of satisfaction from midwife-assisted care, saying they felt listened to, respected and not rushed.

We want to spoil you

We want your birth experience to be memorable.  That’s why all MLKCH moms get a beautiful, spacious, private room with a comfortable sleeping sofa for family members.  We also treat new parents to a “champagne toast” (sparking apple cider, actually) and a cooked-to-order meal of their choice to celebrate the arrival of their bundle of joy.  We’re so happy you’re part of our MLKCH family!
