Where diabetes is concerned, did you know that a proper diet can be as powerful as medication? Healthy foods eaten in the right proportions are the key to keeping your diabetes under control.
The “Food Plate Method” is an easy, visual way to ensure you are eating right. Fill a regular-sized plate as follows:
- 50% of the plate should be non-starchy vegetables, like leafy greens, broccoli, okra, asparagus, eggplant and peppers.
- 25% of the plate should be lean proteins, like fish, grilled chicken, eggs, lean beef or pork or cottage cheese.
- 25% of the plate should be carbohydrates, like grains, starchy vegetables, beans and legumes, fruit, yogurt, and milk. These foods have the greatest effect on blood sugar.
Using this method, you can create healthy, perfectly-portioned meals without any counting, calculating, weighing or measuring.
