MLKCH celebrates $25 million in state budget

We recently welcomed Supervisor Holly Mitchell, Senator Steven Bradford, and Assemblyman Mike Gipson to MLKCH to thank them for their advocacy on behalf of our hospital.

When MLKCH was created, we were projected to serve 30,000 patients a year in our emergency department. The reality is that we routinely serve four times that amount. This volume of patients—the majority of whom are publicly insured—threatens our financial viability.

The County Board of Supervisors committed funding in January.  Gipson, Bradford, and Mitchell together led the charge at the state. Thanks to their efforts, we secured $25 million in the state budget as a temporary measure, ensuring our operations while MLKCH and lawmakers work for a sustainable solution.

Dr. Elaine Batchlor, CEO of MLKCH, offered appreciation, along with patients and staff who shared stories illustrating the hospital's vital role in the community.
