The high-tech South LA wound healing center is the only such facility in California to receive the distinction
August 14, 2023 – MLK Community Healthcare’s (MLKCH) state-of-the-art Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center received “Center of Excellence” designation from Restorix Health this month, the only such facility in California to achieve this recognition.
The designation is the highest awarded by Restorix, a leading wound care management company with more than 280 wound care centers nationwide.
MLKCH’s wound center is the only facility of its kind in California to be designated a “Center of Excellence” and is one of just 29 nationwide to receive the distinction.
“This designation demonstrates MLKCH’s commitment to the highest quality of patient care, optimal outcomes and patient satisfaction,” said Dr. Elaine Batchlor, CEO of MLK Community Healthcare. “MLKCH is living its vision of providing care equal to, if not better, than health systems in more affluent communities.”
MLKCH exceeded benchmarks on nine important criteria of wound care excellence, including patient satisfaction, days to heal and level of healing achieved.
The MLKCH wound center is distinguished by its state-of-the-art hyperbaric chambers, a pressurized medical treatment that exposes injured tissues to high concentrations of oxygen to enhance healing. This advanced therapy has been shown to significantly contribute to the healing of hard-to-heal wounds. Very few hospitals and health systems in California offer hyperbaric therapy and even fewer offer MLKCH’s private, comfortable and television-accessible hyperbaric chambers.
This therapy is urgently needed in South Los Angeles, a largely-Medi-Cal community with an epidemic of diabetes and related hard-to-heal wounds. Proper wound healing can avert amputation due to poorly treated diabetes. MLKCH is the only wound healing center in South Los Angeles.
MLKCH was already a dual recipient of RestorixHealth’s Patient Satisfaction and Clinical Distinction Awards but “a Center of Excellence designation is really hitting it out of the park,” said Joey Knox, MLKCH’s wound center program director. “It’s particularly impressive that we’ve achieved this in a high-need, underserved area.
