The MLKCH Internal Medicine Residency Program offers a strong emphasis on health equity and social medicine and is designed to attract high-quality doctors to underserved communities

Los Angeles – MLK Community Healthcare, an award-winning healthcare system that provides quality care to the underserved community of South LA, now offers a graduate medical education residency program in internal medicine. Applications are being accepted now through Dec. 6 via ERAS.
The program features a strong emphasis on healthcare in the context of equity and social justice, including coursework related to social determinants, such as race/ethnicity, income, access and other factors.
“This is a residency for socially-conscious physicians who want to become the health equity advocates and leaders of the future,” said Dr. Binay Eapen, director of the residency program. “If you want to practice meaningful medicine, come train with us.”
The accredited, 3-year program features:
- An intimate, 1:1 faculty-to-resident ratio;
- Ample opportunity for supervised hands-on patient care;
- Broad exposure to a wide range of pathologies and comorbidities, as well as a thorough understanding of the associated social determinants and root causes.
- Opportunities for longitudinal patient care through rotations at MLK Community Hospital, its affiliated outpatient clinics, community-based health programs, and specialty care centers.
- Comprehensive benefits, including a relocation allowance, housing stipend, tuition reimbursement and health, dental, vision and retirement plans.
The residency is designed to attract quality providers to one of the most medically-underserved communities in the nation. South LA has ten times fewer doctors than more affluent areas and is designated a Medical Shortage Area by HRSA. Lack of access to quality care has resulted in some of the worst health outcomes in the state: The rate of diabetes rate is three times higher than the rest of the state, life expectancy is 10 years shorter.
With philanthropic help, MLKCH created a non-profit medical group in 2017 to attract high-quality physicians to work in South LA. The Internal Medicine Residency Program is another initiative aimed at closing the doctor gap.
