The Ahmanson Foundation Supports MLKCH's Emergency Department Expansion with generous Grant

LOS ANGELES, CA (October 31, 2024) — MLK Community Healthcare (MLKCH) is excited to announce a generous grant from The Ahmanson Foundation to expand the ability of its hospital to receive the growing number of patients who need its care. Funds will be used towards the renovation of 21 single-patient rooms into double-capacity rooms, a much-needed increase to address community need.

Driven by a significant gap in community-based care, including a critical gap of 1,500 physicians, patients seek doctors and services in the MLKCH emergency department, making it one of the busiest in the nation. Some of those patients wait days in the emergency department for inpatient admission.

“Expanding our inpatient capacity is essential for us to continue providing our patients with the timely care they deserve,” said Dyan Sublett, President of the MLK Community Health Foundation. “The growing number of patients who seek our care testify both to the community’s trust and to their great need.  The Ahmanson Foundation’s support ensures that patients do not remain in the emergency department longer than necessary due to a lack of available beds. When the project is completed in March 2025 we will, with the Foundation’s support, be better able to meet the needs of our South LA residents. “

“This project aligns well with the Foundation’s interests,” said Dr. Sara Straubel, Senior Program Officer at The Ahmanson Foundation. “We are proud to partner with MLKCH and support this project that will benefit the South Los Angeles Community.”
